Cat Ba is an up and coming holiday destination about four hours out of Hanoi, with plans in the pipeline for classy resorts, a golf course and even a ferris wheel to lure tourists from far and wide.
The town centre is an eye sore on the picturesque, idyllic island, with crumbling high rises and western-inspired bars and clubs for thirsty travellers. Venture five minutes out by moped and you’re transported to a jungle of rolling hills and lush landscape. Floating restaurants decorate the harbour with colourful fishing boats, and the fresh air was a welcome break from the toxic fumes of Hanoi.
Would I go again? Yes, as long as the vision for it’s future doesn’t disrupt the natural appeal of the island.
